Birdland will kick-off their great week of programming with the following acts:

November 12 (Monday) at 7:00PM

Aisha de Haas

The Broadway at Birdland concert series is happy to announce that Aisha de Haas will appear on the historic stage. Broadway, jazz, rock and soul: a combo platter of these genres molded Aisha de Haas into the singer she is today. This concert, called “The Music That Makes Me Dance,” will include material by Lena Horne, The Beatles, Harold Arlen, and Bonnie Raitt.

Carole J. Bufford at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to present singer Carole J. Bufford in “All By Myself.” Carole J. Bufford will return to the Birdland stage with a concert featuring songs from her first solo album, “All By Myself.” With an eclectic repertoire ranging from Irving Berlin to Bessie Smith to The Beatles, “All By Myself” highlights Carole's innate ability to perform fresh, engaging takes on vintage pop and blues. With her powerhouse vocals and versatile talent, Bufford's material explores the concept of going it alone, whether by choice or not.

Jim Caruso’s Cast Party

Jim Caruso’s Cast Party is a wildly popular weekly soiree that brings a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to the legendary Birdland in New York City every Monday night. It’s a cool cabaret night-out enlivened by a hilariously impromptu variety show. Showbiz superstars, backed by Steve Doyle on bass, Billy Stritch on piano and Daniel Glass on drums, hit the stage alongside up-and-comers, serving up jaw-dropping music and general razzle-dazzle.

November 13-17 (Tuesday-Saturday) at 8:30PM and 11:00PM

Joe Lovano Nonet Plus "Streams of Expression"

With rich, expansive charts written by long-time Cleveland veteran Willie Smith, critically acclaimed, multiple GRAMMY® Award winning saxophonist Joe Lovano leads four saxophones, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, and drums through classic bebop tunes and standards, evoking the spirits of Tadd Dameron, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and Charlie Parker. Like his other ensembles, Joe Lovano’s Nonet hews close to tradition but updates it effectively, reveling in the collective camaraderie of a smallish ensemble that projects all the harmonic opulence of a big band.

Daniel Block at the Birdland Theater

Neal “Sugar” Caine is one of the premier jazz bassist on the scene today. His dynamic style is punctuated by a huge sound, a great feel, and masterful technique that have made him the chosen bassist to an array of stars, from Harry Connick, Jr. and Diana Krall, to the venerable jazz legends Betty Carter and Elvin Jones. A dual resident of New York City and New Orleans, this St. Louis native has delighted audiences worldwide since he began touring internationally at age 19 with the Delfeayo Marsalis Quintet.

David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band

Inspired by the noble jazz pioneers Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton and their colleagues, David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Eternity Band breathes life and passion into America’s own great art form. Now in its 14th year of residency at Birdland, the weekly post-workday engagement is the city’s best musical bargain! Tuba player David Ostwald leads a rotating lineup that features talents such as clarinetist Anat Cohen, trombonist/vocalist Wycliffe Gordon, pianist Ehud Asherie, drummer Marion Felder and more!

So In Love: In Honor of Marin Mazzie at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to announce So in Love: A Benefit Concert for the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, In Honor of Marin Mazzie. The musical event, inspired by one of Broadway’s most beautiful and beloved leading ladies, Marin Mazzie, will star Kelli Rabke (Joseph, Les Miserable, Children of Eden), Todd Buonopane (Spelling Bee, On the 20th Century), Brian Charles Rooney (Pal Joey), Dara Paige Bloomfield (Ragtime), Rachel Zatcoff (Phantom of The Opera, Fiddler), Maggie Hollinbeck (Once), Adam B. Shapiro (Fiddler on the Roof), Sean Patrick Murtagh, Carly Ozard, Christian Sineath, and Les Grant. (Performers subject to change.) Musical director for the event will be Garret Taylor.

Donald Vega Quintet "It's Time"

Donald Vega was trained classically in piano in his native Nicaragua. He emigrated to the United States at age 14 and found a musical home with the Colburn School of Performing Arts. He began his studies there in classical piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo and Dr. Louis Lepley. Vega began learning the language of jazz from mentor Billy Higgins at The World Stage and continued at CSPA with Jeffrey Lavner, then later with bassist John Clayton at the University of Southern California. He went on to graduate from Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School where he studied with piano great, Kenny Barron. Vega currently performs internationally as the pianist for world renowned bassist Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio. Mr. Vega also sits on the board of BackCountry Jazz, a non-profit organization which provides music education programs and performances to under privileged youth.

“The Word At Birdland” A Conversation With Budd Mishkin, Wynton Marsalis and Ruben Blades at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to announce that journalist Budd Mishkin will be interviewing musicians Wynton Marsalis and Ruben Blades in an intimate and compelling conversation on Thursday, November 15 at 7pm. The evening will include questions and interaction with the live audience.

Queering the Stage: Introducing Ring of Keys at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to present Queering The Stage: Introducing Ring of Keys, is making its Birdland debut. The national network of queer women+, trans, and gender non-conforming professional artists working on and offstage in musical theatre. Queering The Stage is a celebration of Ring of Keys Members - aka “Keys” - and their work. Audiences can expect to hear gender identity and sexuality norms turned on their heads - queering songs, characters, and the stage! Backed by a 3-piece band, Queering The Stage is an opportunity to create visibility at the intersection of gender identity, sexuality, and musical theatre. Ring of Keys strives to kick (ball-change) the closet door open to create a vibrant, diverse musical theatre landscape for the future.

Founded by drummer and musical director Tommy Igoe, the Birdland Big Band features the finest musicians in New York! "A Little Old, A Little New" Choreographed by Luke Hickey at the Birdland Theater

A high-energy evening of Tap Dance, featuring a wide variety of music ranging from the sophistication of Jazz music in the 1930’s to the finesse and attack of Hip Hop in present day. “A Little Old, A Little New” will be performed by John Manzari, Andre Imanishi, and Luke Hickey. This percussive dance review is choreographed and directed by Luke Hickey, and accompanied by the sensational Davis Whitfield and his trio, Maniacs of the 4th Dimension. This is a tribute to the Jazz legends who have shaped us all.

Carmen Ruby Floyd in Well Hello, Carmen! at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to present Carmen Ruby Floyd in Well Hello, Carmen! Drawing from her extensive resume of Tony Award-winning musicals such as After Midnight, The Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess, and now, Hello, Dolly!, Ms. Floyd’s show will include her love of jazz, soul, R&B, classical and contemporary theatre. Well Hello, Carmen! will cover Ms. Floyd's theatrical journey starting as a young girl from Buffalo in the Toronto company of Disney’s The Lion King, through her off-Broadway and television appearances, and ultimately to the bright lights of Broadway!

Eric Comstock

Singer/pianist Eric Comstock has been called "a song's best friend," and the jazz and pop songbooks are in great hands when he is onstage at Birdland. Whether the song is by Rodgers and Hart or Ellington and Strayhorn, Paul Simon or Bob Dylan, you'll hear the lyric as if for the first time. Joining Eric will be eminent bassist/composer Sean Smith -- in all, a perfect winter Saturday supper!

Victoria Shaw at the Birdland Theater

Birdland Theater is proud to announce that singer/songwriter Victoria Shaw will host another “Under The Covers.” Hosted by award winning songwriter Victoria Shaw, “Under The Covers” has become a favorite recurring highlight at Birdland, featuring a wide variety of top-selling songwriters and musical acts from across the pop, rock and country worlds, and offering intimate acoustic performances of huge hit songs - along with the little-known stories behind them. Victoria’s very special guests will be Steve Dorff and Roger Cook.

November 18 (Sunday) at 6:00PM

John Bailey: "In Real Time"

The opening trumpet fanfare of John Bailey's debut album In Real Time heralds the arrival of a major, fully formed talent. Yet Bailey is no newcomer to jazz: this is his first album as a leader after more than 30 years as one of the busiest sidemen in the business. Known as one of the most eclectic trumpet players in New York City, Bailey is an in-demand musician and teaching artist on call for everything from traditional jazz, to R&B and pop, to classical.

November 18 (Sunday) at 9PM & 11PM

The Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and educator Arturo O'Farrill -- leader of the "first family of Afro-Cuban Jazz" (NY Times) -- was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Son of the late, great composer Chico O'Farrill, Arturo was Educated at Manhattan School of Music, Brooklyn College Conservatory and the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. He played piano in Carla Bley's Big Band from 1979 through 1983 and earned a reputation as a soloist in groups led by Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte.

Named for alto saxophonist and jazz pioneer Charlie "Bird" Parker who dubbed it "The Jazz Corner of the World," Birdland opened on December 15th 1949. For 60 years it has been home to jazz legends, from Parker, John Coltrane Duke Ellington and Count Basie to Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones, Diana Krall and everyone in between. The original 52nd street location was a cultural barometer and meeting place, inspiring the songs "Birdland" and "Lullaby of Birdland," and serving as a regular haunt for celebrities and cultural figures.
