The Student Theatre Arts Festival features 10 student groups from Roundabout’s Partner Schools and After School Theatre Programs performing 8-minute excerpts from their school plays and musicals.

Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) and Education at Roundabout (Jennifer DiBella, Director of Education) are pleased to announce the fifth annual Student Theatre Arts Festival, hosted by 2015 Tony Award nominee Andy Karl (On the Twentieth Century).

The Student Theatre Arts Festival is Monday, May 18 at the American Airlines Theatre (227 West 42nd Street). The evening begins with a student design exhibition at 6:00pm, followed by opening remarks from Andy Karl and performances at 6:30pm. Tickets are FREE.

Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League nominee Andy Karl currently stars as “Bruce Granit” in Roundabout’s critically acclaimed revival of On the Twentieth Century.

The 2015 Student Theatre Arts Festival features performances from Little Shop of Horrors (James Madison High School, Brooklyn), Cheerleading Play (PS/IS 111, Queens), The Crucible (Bronx Theatre High School), 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School, Brooklyn), Into the Hood (Esperanza Preparatory Academy, Manhattan), Farce of Nature (Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School for International Careers, Manhattan), The Condemned (Roundabout Theatre Company’s Student Production Workshop), Senior Exit Project Selections (Repertory Company High School, Manhattan) and In the Heights (Port Richmond High School, Staten Island).

The fifth annual Student Theatre Arts Festival features the work of students from 12 partner schools, representing the five boroughs of New York City. The evening begins with a “Gallery Walk” through exhibits of students’ costume and set designs. Student performers will present selected scenes and musical numbers from original and existing plays and musicals. The festival provides student artists a chance to celebrate their artistic work from this school year and share their talents with their peers.

Education programs at Roundabout are made possible with the generous support of many foundations, corporations and individuals. Roundabout is grateful for their commitment to these initiatives. Education programs are also supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Education at Roundabout connects with students and teachers through customized school partnerships, residency programs, mentorships and workshops in the practice of professional theatrical skills, professional development workshops, internships, apprenticeships, backstage tours, talkbacks and pre-show workshops. For each Roundabout production, Education also creates Upstage guides, which include interviews, contextual information, teacher resources and activities, and presents a schedule of Theatre Plus events, including pre-show talks every Tuesday and post-show Lecture Series and Celebrity Series events featuring a distinguished artist, scholar, historian or critic.

ANDY KARL is nominated for Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League awards for his portrayal of “Bruce Granit” in Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of On the Twentieth Century. He was also nominated for all four awards last season for his critically acclaimed performance as “Rocky Balboa” in the Broadway musical Rocky. Karl previously starred in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Drama Desk nomination), 9 to 5, Legally Blonde (ACCA Award), The Wedding Singer, Saturday Night Fever, Altar Boyz (OCC Award), Slut, Saturday Night, Romeo and Bernadette (Carbonell nomination). Film credits include: And So It Goes, directed by Rob Reiner, Joyful Noise, “Legally Blonde: The Search for Elle Woods,” and New York, I Love You.

On the Twentieth Century opened officially on March 15, 2015 at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway (227 West 42nd Street). The strictly limited engagement has been extended through July 19, 2015.
