Previews begin Friday, September 14, 2018, at the Mezzanine Theatre at the A.R.T./New York Theatres (502 W 53rd Street), opening Tuesday, September 25, 2018, for a limited 7 week run through Sunday, October 28, 2018.

“I’m looking forward to examining the ways privilege can permeate everyday life through a modern retelling of these classic plays,” said director Eric Tucker.

Cast, design team and ticket information for ROMEO & JULIET/UNCLE VANYA will be announced shortly.

William Shakespeare’s ROMEO & JULIET is the iconic tragedy about two young star-crossed lovers and their feuding families. Anton Chekhov’s UNCLE VANYA tells the story of the visit of an elderly professor and his glamorous, much younger second wife, to the rural estate that supports their urban lifestyle.

The playing schedule for ROMEO & JULIET/UNCLE VANYA is as follows: Tuesday through Thursday at 7pm, Friday and Saturday at 8pm, and Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Please note there will be no performances Saturday, September 15, and an added performance Monday, September 17.

The A.R.T./New York Theatres are a project of the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York), which provide state-of-the-art, accessible venues at subsidized rental rates, plus free access to top-line technical equipment, so that the city’s small and emerging theatre companies can continue to experiment, grow, and produce new works. Recent BEDLAM productions include PYGMALION by George Bernard Shaw at The Sheen Center, PETER PAN by J.M. Committed to the immediacy of the relationship between the actor and the audience, BEDLAM creates works of theatre that reinvigorate traditional forms in a flexible, raw space, collapsing aesthetic distance and bringing its viewers into direct contact with the dangers and delicacies of life. In this new, fresh, active environment storytelling becomes paramount and the result is a kinetic experience of shared empathy.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING ABOUT BEDLAM

Terry Teachout, Wall Street Journal/3 on the Aisle – “BEDLAM is a band of gifted unknowns who can make theatrical magic in an empty room. No theater troupe in America is doing more creative classical revivals. I believe Eric Tucker is this Country’s most talented director of classic Theatre. BEDLAM made its name six years ago with a pair of 4 person staging’s of SAINT JOAN and HAMLET. SAINT JOAN was the most exciting George Bernard Shaw revival I’ve ever seen, bar none, and it still is. Partly what makes BEDLAM so interesting is that they have deliberately decide they will perform in small spaces but have large conceptions, that’s the key to me. Eric Tucker is a kind of genius at making theatrical magic in black-box theater spaces”

The New York Times, Ben Brantley - “No troupe in New York these days rides the storytelling momentum of theater more resourcefully or enthusiastically than BEDLAM.”

Hilton Als, The New Yorker - “BEDLAM injects fresh blood and ideas into the theatre community and is all about jolting the audience out of complacency. Eric Tucker’s ability to peel away the layers while supporting the emotionalism of a performer makes you see things with new and less cynical eyes.”

New York Post – “I can’t wait to see what BEDLAM tackles next!”

Houston Press – “BEDLAM slaps awake classic tales with an irreverent relevance that borders on blinding radiance.”

Huffington Post - “BEDLAM is one of the best theater troupes in New York City right now, smartly inventive and bold. BEDLAM makes theatre immensely more involving and entertaining for the playgoer who's lucky enough to secure a seat.”
