Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director/CEO) is pleased to announce that Matthew Morrison “Joe Hardy,” Stephen Bogardus “Joe Boyd,” Annie Golden “Doris,” Julie Halston “Sister” and Adrienne Warren “Gloria Thorpe” have joined the Benefit Concert Reading of Damn Yankees, the Tony award-winning musical comedy by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. The evening will bring these beloved stars of stage and screen back to the Broadway stage for one night only with Whoopi Goldberg as “Applegate,” Maggie Gyllenhaal as “Lola,” Danny Burstein as “Van Buren” and Victoria Clark as “Meg Boyd.”

Roundabout’s Associate Artist Kathleen Marshall will direct this one-night only special event. Roundabout welcomes back Kathleen following her Tony Award winning work directing and choreographing Anything Goes and prior to that, her Tony-winning choreography for another Adler and Ross musical comedy – The Pajama Game (Tony Award, Best Revival). Ms. Gyllenhaal returns following her acclaimed Broadway debut in The Real Thing, Matthew Morrison was last at Roundabout in A Naked Girl on the Appian Way, Stephen Bogardus was last seen in Old Acquaintance, Danny Burstein returns following his Tony nominated performance in Cabaret and before that Talley’s Folly, Victoria Clark returns following her starring role in The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Annie Golden returns after the Tony-nominated musical Violet and Julie Halston was last with Roundabout for Anything Goes and On the Twentieth Century. Roundabout is thrilled to welcome legendary Ms. Goldberg and Adrienne Warren into the family of Roundabout artists.

The Benefit Concert Reading will take place on Monday, December 11, 2017 at 7:30 PM at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.

BIOS:

WHOOPI GOLDBERG (Applegate). Whoopi Goldberg is one of an elite group of artists who have won the Grammy, the Academy Award, the Golden Globe, the Emmy and Daytime Emmy and a Tony Award. Born and raised in New York City, Whoopi worked in theatre and improvisation in San Diego and the Bay Area, where she performed with the Blake Street Hawkeyes theatre troupe. It was there that she created the characters which became “The Spook Show” and evolved into her hit Broadway show, Grammy Award-winning album and the HBO special that helped launch her career. Whoopi made her motion picture debut in Steven Spielberg’s film version of Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple,” for which she earned an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award. Her performance in “Ghost” earned her the Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and she has starred in such films as “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Clara’s Heart,” “The Long Walk Home,” “Soapdish,” “Sister Act,” “Made in America,” “Boys on the Side,” “Ghosts of Mississippi,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “Girl, Interrupted,” and “The Lion King, among many others. Whoopi has also produced numerous series, specials and movies for television, as well as theatrical productions on Broadway and around the world, including the Tony Award-winning “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and the Tony-nominated “Sister Act: The Musical.” Whoopi’s Broadway credits include “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Xanadu” and she made her West End stage debut in a special limited run as Mother Superior in “Sister Act: The Musical” in 2011. She is a best-selling author and currently moderates ABC’s Emmy Award-winning “The View,” for which she has won a Daytime Emmy Award. Whoopi was recently elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Board of Governors, which sets the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health and assures the fulfillment of its mission. MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL (Lola). Maggie Gyllenhaal is one of the great young actresses of today. In 2014, Gyllenhaal headlined the BBC/Sundance TV original series The Honorable Woman garnering a 2015 Golden Globe Award, a SAG Award nomination, and an Emmy Award nomination. She also gained critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for "Best Supporting Actress" for her portrayal of Jean Craddock in Crazy Heart alongside Jeff Bridges, further exemplifying her talent and versatility as an actress. After receiving rave reviews out of the 2002 Sundance competition for her starring role opposite James Spader in Lion’s Gate’s Secretary, she went on to receive a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical”, an Independent Spirit Award nomination for “Best Actress,” a Chicago Film Critics’ Award for “Most Promising Performer,” A Boston Film Critics’ Award for “Best Actress,” a National Board of Review Award for “Breakthrough Performance” and an IFP/ Gotham “Breakthrough Performance” Award. Gyllenhaal made her feature film debut in 1992, alongside Jeremy Irons and Ethan Hawke in Waterland. This was followed by a memorable performance as “Raven”, the Satan-worshipping make-up artist in John Waters’ quirky Hollywood satire, Cecil B. Demented, which led her to a co-starring role in Donnie Darko, a fantasy-thriller about disturbed adolescence. Years later, back at Sundance in 2007, Gyllenhaal starred in Sherrybaby; she played a female convict struggling to overcome her drug addiction and regain custody of her daughter. The film was well-received by critics and garnered her second Golden Globe nomination, this time for Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama. Gyllenhaal was also nominated for a 2006 Independent Spirit Award for her role in Don Roos’ Happy Endings, opposite Lisa Kudrow and Tom Arnold. She was Rachel Dawes in the Warner Bros. box office hit Dark Knight directed by Chris Nolan. She was also seen in Sam Mendes’s Away We Go. Also accomplished on stage, Gyllenhaal starred as “Alice” in Patrick Mauber’s award-winning Closer at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles for director Robert Egan, and previously at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. She has also appeared in Anthony and Cleopatra at the Vanborough Theatre in London. In 2004, Gyllenhaal starred in Tony Kushner’s play Homebody/Kabul, which ran in both Los Angeles and at B.A.M. Next, Gyllenhaal will be seen alongside Peter Sarsgaard and Mamie Gummer in Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov. In August 2010, Gyllenhaal was seen in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang with Emma Thompson. In 2011, Gyllenhaal appeared in the Anton Chekhov play ‘Three Sisters’ alongside Peter Sarsgaard, Jessica Hecht and Josh Hamilton and also starred alongside Hugh Dancy in the romantic comedy, Hysteria. In 2012, Gyllenhaal starred in the drama, Won’t Back Down alongside Viola Davis and directed by Daniel Barnz. On the silver screen, Gyllenhaal was seen in Lenny Abrahamson’s Frank, co-starring Michael Fassbender and in White House Down, directed by Roland Emmerich alongside Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx. In 2014, Gyllenhaal made her Broadway debut in Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing, opposite Ewan McGregor and Cynthia Nixon. Gyllenhaal produced and is starring in David Simon’s HBO drama The Deuce, currently airing its first season on HBO to rave reviews. She recently wrapped filming on The Kindergarten Teacher, an independent film of which she is also producing and starring, in New York.

MATTHEW MORRISON (Joe Hardy) is a versatile actor who is recognized for his work on-stage and on-screen. He has been nominated for Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Last year, Morrison starred as “J.M Barrie” in the musical Finding Neverland and before that, he starred opposite Cameron Diaz in the Lionsgate film What to Expect When You’re Expecting. In July 2016, released the soccer-centric animated comedy, Underdogs, was released with voices led by Morrison, Ariana Grande and Bella Thorne. His other film credits include the Ning Hao helmed film Crazy Alien, starring alongside Huang Bo and Tom Pelphrey, Justin Chadwick’s Tulip Fever opposite Jack O’Connell, Christoph Waltz and Dame Judi Dench. On the television side, Morrison is best known for starring as “Will Schuester” on Fox’s hit musical comedy series “Glee,” which aired its final season in 2015. More recently, he recurred on CBS’s “The Good Wife and appeared on the most recent season of “Grey’s Anatomy.” Matthew made his debut on Broadway in Footloose but his big break came when he was cast as heartthrob Link Larkin in the hit Hairspray. Morrison was later nominated for a Tony Award for his role in The Light in the Piazza, and received a Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for 10 Million Miles.

STEPHEN BOGARDUS (Joe Boyd) has worked on 13 Broadway productions including Les Misérables, Falsettos, The Grapes of Wrath, Love! Valour! Compassion!, James Joyce’s The Dead and Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s Bright Star. Mr. Bogardus has appeared Off-Broadway in Sondheim/Lapine’s Passion, David Greenspan’s Go Back to Where You Are, and Craig Wright’s The Pavilion. VICTORIA CLARK (Meg Boyd). Victoria Clark maintains a wonderfully diverse acting career, equally at home in plays, musicals, film, television, and the concert stage. As a stage director, her work spans from original musicals to opera, to educational programming for all ages. Victoria grew up the youngest of three children in Dallas, Texas. Encouraged by her parents and grandmother, she began voice and piano lessons at the age of six. Music has been her catalyst and companion ever since. She was blessed with extraordinary educational opportunities with generous teachers and mentors: Don Hermonat at First Community Church in Dallas, Sharon Grahnquist at The Hockaday School in Dallas, Gottfried Hornik at the Vienna State Opera, Edward Sayegh in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and in New York City: Rebecca Taylor, Michael Howard, and Beret Arcaya. Her education began at The Hockaday School in Dallas, and expanded to include the Interlochen Summer Arts Program (Interlochen, Michigan), American Institute of Musical Studies (Graz, Austria), and The Mozarteum (Salzburg, Austria.) Victoria graduated from Cum Laude from Yale University with a B.A. in Music, and attended New York University’s prestigious Graduate Musical Theater Writing Program as a stage director. After one year in graduate school, Victoria had the opportunity to audition for the original production of Sunday in the Park with George, which she booked. From that point forward, she continued to enjoy her journey as a professional actor which has led her to twelve Broadway plays and musicals, several off-Broadway plays and musicals, and many films and television appearances. Highlights include The Light in the Piazza on Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater for which she was awarded the Tony Award for Leading Actress in a Musical, and starring roles in the original casts of Gigi (revival), Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, and Sister Act, for which she received Tony nominations. Ms. Clark’s films include The Happening, The Enchanted Forest, Cradle Will Rock, Tickling Leo, Harvest, Main Street, and Archaeology of a Woman. Televisions credits include Homeland, The Good Wife, Mercy, Law and Order, and Law and Order SVU. Victoria directed the original musical Newton’s Cradle by Heath Saunders and Kim Saunders for the 2016 New York Musical Theater Festival, for which she won the festival’s award for Best Director. She has also directed for Texas Opera Theater, Philadelphia Opera, Chautauqua Opera, 92nd St. Y, the John Drew Theater, NAMT, and Pace University. In 2017, she will direct the World Premiere of The Trouble With Doug for The Fredericia Theater in Fredericia, Denmark. Ms. Clark is an avid teacher and educator. She served on the faculty at Yale University and as Artist-in-Residence at Pace University, and teaches at conservatories and universities worldwide, as well as in her private studio in New York City. Writing has always been a passion for Victoria. Her original solo autobiographical show The Blessing Ring is in the final stages of development. Her solo debut CD, Fifteen Seconds of Grace, is available through PS Classics. Victoria is the proud mother of Thomas Luke (T.L.) Guest. She resides in Manhattan with her husband Tom Reidy.

ANNIE GOLDEN (Doris) considers herself the illegitimate child of the legitimate theatre having been discovered on the Bowery fronting a rock band and cast by Milos Forman as Jeannie in Hair, the 1978 film. Annie is presently at work filming “Orange Is the New Black” on Netflix. Silence is golden, and so is Annie’s character, Norma Romano! On Broadway and off, she was last seen in Violet, and created the role of Georgie Bukatinsky in The Full Monty; Sondheim’s original Squeaky Fromme in Assassins, the off-Broadway production at Playwrights Horizons, directed by Jerry Zaks; Ah! Wilderness with Colleen Dewhurst and Jason Robards; On The Town; and Little Shop of Horrors as Audrey. Her numerous film credits include Bite Me- due out in 2018, Touched by Fire opposite Katie Holmes, Twelve Monkeys; Baby Boom; Brooklyn Rules; Suddenly Seeking Susan; I Love You, Phillip Morris; and Miles. Her television credits include “Difficult People,” “The 2-2,” “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “Cheers,” “Miami Vice,” “Third Watch,” and most notably as Norma Romano for five seasons in the award-winning Netflix series “Orange is the New Black.”

JULIE HALSTON (Sister). Ms. Halston recently starred as Helen Hubbard in the McCarter Theatre Center's highly successful production of Murder on The Orient Express. Other recent credits include Richard Greenberg's The Babylon Line at Lincoln Center Theater and her acclaimed performance as Gay Wellington in the Broadway revival of You Can't Take It With You for which she received the Richard Seff Award and a Drama Desk Award nomination. Other Broadway credits include On the Town, Anything Goes, Hairspray, Gypsy, and The Twentieth Century (Outer Critics Circle nomination). Founding member of Charles Busch's legendary theatre company, she co-starred with Mr. Busch in numerous productions including The Divine Sister (Drama Desk Award nomination), The Tribute Artist, and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. Regional credits include The Confederacy of Dunces with Nick Offerman at Huntington Theatre Company and The Guardsman at The Kennedy Center. Television: Bitsy Von Muffling in “Sex and the City,” “The Class” (series regular), “Difficult People,” “Law and Order: SVU,” and Woody Allen's “Crisis in Six Scenes.” Miss Halston is the recipient of the Off-Broadway Alliance Lifetime Achievement Award.

ADRIENNE WARREN (Gloria Thorpe) was most recently seen in the Broadway production of Shuffle Along as "Gertrude Saunders/Florence Mills," for which she received a Tony nomination for Best Performance by a Features Actress in a Musical. Upcoming, Adrienne will star as Tina in the highly anticipated West End production of Tina: The Musical. She originated the role of Danielle in the Tony Nominated Bring It On the Musical on Broadway and was also seen at the Apollo Theater as Lorrell in Dreamgirls, followed by a national tour. Other New York theatre credits include: The Wiz at Encores City Center. She has toured and recorded with the multi-platinum selling Trans-Siberian Orchestra in which she received her first Platinum and Gold records. She has been seen in live performances on the Today’s Show, The Wendy William’s Show, America’s Got Talent, the 67th annual Tony Awards, and performed as well as recorded as a vocalist for the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. TV credits include “Orange is the New Black,” “Blue Bloods,” “Royal Pains,” People in New Jersey,” “Irreversible,” “Black Box” and several pilots. This past March, Adrienne made her Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops. She is currently the voice of Maybelline New York.
